Edge Profiles and Knife Chemistry: Tapered, Square, Beveled

The edge is sold to the finisher. Get it wrong and you lose a customer the third time it happens.

Tapered edge for taped joints, square for special applications, beveled for exposed installations. Each profile imposes a different demand on the slurry at the moment of cut. Tapered edges in particular are forgiving of a slightly underset board (the recess hides minor crumb), while square edges expose every weakness.

If you are sending square-edged board through a line tuned for tapered, retarder dosage must drop and accelerator must rise to firm the board ahead of the knife. Most plants discover this the hard way on the first square-edge order.
